What kind of dinghy are we talking about? It is a great looking, rugged, reliable rack that is extremely easy to install. Still, there is a small-but-nonzero chance that I'd regret that purchase. I think the manual trans is ok up to 1000 lbs according to Vw, but some have gone over with no problems. What's more, it's a de facto standard. It fits tight and looks clean and compact. That said, I wold buy a Whispbar rack sight unseen based on the above evidence. For what it's worth, I'm a mechanical engineer, and I've been reasonably impressed: the drag claims are within reason, the prices are high but not outrageous for the benefits, and none of the marketing claims are obviously false.

I picked up a Yakima Whispbar Through-Bar and put the Yakima Loadwarrior on it to use for my road trips. The crossbars are secured to the feet from inside the crossbar and the crossbars have locking endcaps. The CrossRoad foot is made of metal with an nice plastic shroud. Picking Volkswagen Jetta cargo carriers from preferred brands is simple at AutoAccessoriesGarage. I already had clamps that attached to roof rails, and the proper sized crossbars.

I use a Yakima setup which allows me to run bars wider than the roof rails, which I feel is required for a 17ft canoe. The AeroBlade cross-bars cut the wind, reducing drag and nearly eliminating noise. I would like to get that rack but I have the panoramic sunroof.
This is a great aerodynamic raised rail rack at a great price! I lost too many mpg on a long trip with my yakima crossbar system when loaded with my x-large mtb on top. The RailGrab towers include 3 different size claws so if you switch cars it is more likely you can use the same rack. Also, sells the Whispbar product, and the various Rack Attack blogs have me convinced that a some people at Rack Attack are pretty smart, and b Rack Attack wouldn't sell Whispbar products if they were complete crap. Slide the foot into the load bar, then wrap the band around the side rail, tighen by turning the integrated handle with built-in hex wrench, no additional tools are needed.

It holds a ton of gear up to 160 lbs and I'm pretty sure if the car flipped over, it would support the entire weight of the vehicle it's strong stuff.

These racks and cargo carriers let you open up crucial space in your interior, and they also keep your gear safe from theft and harsh weather. Once you put the rack on top, it's like having the sunroof open.
